I was born in New York City and grew up as a New Yorker riding the subway to school. My parents met at a ski and bike shop in New York City while they were in high school. We traveled to snow upstate and in Vermont whenever possible. I have always skied and always loved it!
When I was 10, my parents divorced and my mother, brother and I moved to Vermont. I started out running and alpine racing, but alpine was getting expensive and a friend convinced me to ski cross country. She said it was a blast and all the cute soccer boys were doing it. It was in Vermont that I decided I wanted to pursue my dream of competing in the Olympics. I loved skiing for Harwood, my high school team, and knew I wanted to continue skiing in college.
I graduated from Northern Michigan University with a B.F.A. in Environmental Design. While in College I competed in both Cross Country Running and Nordic Skiing earning All- American Status in both.
Shortly after graduation my mother, who had moved to St. Paul, MN fell ill and needed me to help her while she battled cancer and the chemo and surgery it required. I packed my things and headed to a part of the country I knew very little about and even less about the people. I thought my dreams of competing in the Olympics were over but it didn’t matter because I wanted to spend the time with my mother.
As my mother recovered and gained her strength I soon realized that I was in an amazing place to be a Nordic Skier. Everywhere I went I met enthusiastic people who invited me to join them for training. The trend continues even after living in the Twin Cities for over a decade, what a great community.
I am on the roster of In-the-Arena, a national organization that puts at-risk youth in our community with Elite athletes who can inspire and motivate them to reach a better and more fulfilling life. I work with the Gerry Gamble Boys and Girls Club as a role model and mentor for the local area youth. I love what I do and the kids that I work with. The kids and their families see me out training and help cheer me on. I enjoy living and working in the same community. My favorite project with the kids is the Run Club that Brian and I started. We run laps in the park in front of the Club, chart our mileage and race various 5 km fun runs around the city.
After over 15 years of diligent training filled with victories and setbacks, I reached my goal of making the 2010 Winter Olympic Team. Almost like a fairytale my dreams came true and I was thrilled to finish 6th in the Team Sprint with Kikkan Randall and 30th in the individual 10K Skate race. Although qualifying and competing in the Olympics was an accomplishment, the real experience came from the support of the community and friends who helped me throughout the journey. Without them I never would have the successes I have had and they were always on my mind. Instead of representing myself at the Olympic Games I representing the dedication and perseverance of thousands who made it all possible and believed in me.
Leading into the 2014 Olympics one of my big goals was to help Brian make the team. I came very close to qualifying for my 2nd Olympic Team, including winning the National Championship the month before by 3:36. I didn’t get discouraged when I missed the team naming and instead refocused my efforts on the 2015 World Championships. In the 10km Freestyle at the 2015 World Championships I won a bronze medal, even better I shared the podium with my teammate American Jessie Diggins. This breakthrough race marked the first ever medal for an American woman in a World Championship distance race.
The upcoming 2016/2017 season is going to be an exciting one. This year will be another World Championship year with the events being held in Lahti, Finland at the end of February through early March. My favorite event the 30K Skate will be on the schedule and all of my focus has been to prepare for that event! Stay tuned as I train and race towards my best World Championship finish yet!
